Lib Dems Incinerate Taxpayers’ Money

Taxpayers money is going up in smoke as Cornwall’s waste plans fall apart. Landfill fines and money wasted on the plans will hit residents’s bank balances hard says Jude Robinson, Labour PPC for Camborne & Redruth (including Hayle), following the chaos of yesterday’s Planning Committee at Cornwall County Council.

Jude said: “Once again, Lib Dems are breaking new ground in ineptitude as they voted against their own proposals for a central incinerator in Cornwall.

“It is hard to imagine how any political party could be incompetent enough to spend several years devising proposals, signing contracts, directing officers to spend hundreds of  (taxpayer-funded) hours developing and implementing them, only to publicly incinerate them at the last minute.

“Incineration is a proven technology with reasonable costs. There may be more environmentally friendly possibilities around but at this point, Cornwall does not have the time to find and develop them. Taxpayers will now be funding landfill penalties. more officer time looking for another solution, negotiations with Sita over the contract that has been reneged on and possibly penalties over that.

“And somewhere in Cornwall, a community is going to find a huge hole on its doorstep for landfill, promises will be broken over United Downs or we will be producing more carbon emissions trucking our waste upcountry and paying someone else to dump or incinerate it.  Perhaps all three.

The Lib Dems have run Cornwall since 2005. Whenever it has come to taking difficult decisions and gaining respect for serious work in the real world, they have chosen instead to inhabit Planet Calamity. But when politicians take decisions, they have to take responsibility. When the  massive increase in council tax hits the bank balances of people in Cornwall it is the Liberal Democrats they have to blame.”

Redruth North Partnership

Labour’s Parliamentary candidate, Jude Robinson, and Cllr Stephen Barnes are giving full support to the highly successful Redruth North Partnership (RNP), whose existence is threatened by a funding shortfall.

Jude said: “The Partnership is not asking for anything extraordinary – just core money to keep the partnership going over the next 3 -5 years, so that it can become self-sufficient. RNP has been hugely successful in bringing residents together to tackle anti-social behaviour, providing support and training to help people get back to work and improving the area.

“I attended the AGM of the Partnership last year and it was clear that it is working well, it is led by the local community and Kerrier Council is getting a very good deal on its recent investment to continue the project . This raises questions about the way that grant money is allocated, when this success is threatened by a relatively small shortfall.”

Cllr Barnes said: “” The Redruth North Partnership is what Localism is all about. The other major agencies and quangos should sit up and take more notice of the excellent work done by the Partnership.”

The Redruth North Partnership is a network of six local Residents’ Associations and works closely with the Police Neighbourhood Beat Team to decide priorities for action in the area. Since last year, the highly successful ‘Greenfingers’ scheme has motivated teenagers to give back to their local community by tidying up gardens and green spaces in the area. In return for the work, attendees receive free driving lessons, free First Aid training, free debt management advice and on successful completion will hold a NVQ Level 1 in Horticulture (Gardening) from Duchy College.

Jude said;

“After meeting with Kevin Hawke, the RNP co-ordinator of RNP and Jack Clemens, one of the Directors of the RNP last week, I offered my full support to help the Partnership secure its future. But this has also raised issues about how community groups secure funding that I want to feed back directly to government, especially in the light of recent proposals from Hazel Blears, Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government about making councils and agencies more accountable to communities. Redruth North has already been short changed over the second phase of the Home Zone project. Losing the RNP would add insult to injury.”

Labour leadership elections result

Jude Robinson, Camborne & Redruth’s Parliamentary candidate has today welcomed Gordon Brown and Harriet Harman as Leader and Deputy Leader of the Labour Party.

“Gordon was a key figure in the decisions that led to Cornwall getting Objective One funding and has been incredibly supportive to the county, keeping his promise to provide match funding from government so that EU funds could be drawn down. He has also won immense respect world wide for his stewardship of the UK economy.”

“I am also delighted that Harriet Harman has won the Deputy’s post, especially as she has shown her commitment to Cornwall on many occasions and visited us only a few weeks ago. Harriet has been a passionate campaigner on family and women’s issues and worked hard on legislation such as the minimum wage and more rights for working parents, so I believe we will see a renewed focus on these policies in the future.”

“I have invited them both to Cornwall and hope they will be able to visit here soon to see how the Labour Government has improved Cornwall, with regeneration, the minimum wage and investment in public services.”

Jude Robinson to fight new seat for Labour

Camborne and Redruth Labour Party members have selected their Prospective Parliamentary candidate for the next general election, Jude Robinson, who is well known to Party members and constituents as Candy Atherton’s campaign agent in 1997 and 2005. She worked for Candy in the constituency office and at Westminster for several years.

Jude said: “I feel privileged to be representing Labour in Camborne Redruth. The people of this area are deeply disappointed by the Liberal Democrats, who are in power here and unaccountable. That has to change. Too many people here have not benefited from the money that has poured into the county because of failures by Lib Dem MPs to deliver for Cornwall. The support is there for a Labour victory in this new seat at the next general election.”

Candy Atherton, the local Labour MP for eight years and now chair of the local Party, said: “I am delighted that such a strong voice for Cornwall has been chosen as our candidate. Jude knows every last inch of this new constituency and is passionate for the change we need in Cornwall.”

Jude has strong ties with Cornwall having lived here for more than sixteen years.  A former Carrick counciller she is proud that her three grown up children were all born in the county she and her husband Steve call home.

Congratulations Mrs Robinson, and it was good to see in yesterday’s edition that is the 16th May 2007, of The Camborne Redruth Packet, that Miss Atherton looks also so well.

If this heavy wet weather does lift I hope you will next time you all get together, it is Cornish Splits and a little of Nigel the Jam’s Blackberry Jam of 2007.

Hope things go well throughout this year for you all.

  2. Mr.Roger Dudley

Dear Jude I would like to wish you all the success with the next election. I was a liberal Democrat at the last election but I am now thinking that was a mistake and I am willing to place a labour sticker in my window once more as tony blair is no longer the prime minister and i like Gordon Brown as I think that he can be trusted. Yours Mr.R.T.Dudley 80 Grenville Gardens Troon Camborne TR14 9DU
