Labour’s Parliamentary Candidate for South East Cornwall 2010 was MICHAEL SPARLING

Michael, 27, was raised in the area having attended school in Launceston.

“It is a real privilege to be selected to fight for this constituency. Whether it is the tolls, the incinerator or the state of our roads I know that the current fight between the Tories and Lib Dems in Cornwall is leaving local people left out in the cold. With under 90 days until the expected day of the General Election I pledge to be campaigning every day to make sure that I am not only fighting on local issues but also listening to local people’s concerns.”

“People are now realising that there is a choice at this election. A choice between a Labour Government that has invested in families, schools, colleges and hospitals in Cornwall and a Conservative government that would risk our recovery here in Cornwall.”

Michael works for one of the world’s largest airlines and is based in the Westcountry. “I’m proud to say I come from the Westcountry. After the expenses scandal and the failure of local government in Cornwall to address local people’s needs there is a need for a new type of positive politics. I’ve already been out on the doors in Cornwall and pledge to hold the Tories and Lib Dems to account in South East Cornwall. It is game on for the General Election.”

Michael Sparling, 27, was born in Barnstaple. He was raised in this area, attending St Joseph’s Primary School in Launceston be fore attending Exeter Cathedral School, St Boniface’s College and Plymouth College of Further Education.

Michael read BA Philosophy and Politics at The University of Manchester and graduated with Honours in 2005.

Michael has worked in the constituency office of former government minister Rt Hon Kitty Ussher MP. He has also worked on political campaigns for Linda Gilroy MP (Plymouth Sutton) and Luke Pollard PPC (South West Devon). Michael stood as a candidate in the Devon County Council elections 2008 and was widely praised for the positive campaign he ran.

Michael is currently a postgraduate student in the Development field. He also works for one of the world’s most successful airlines and is based in the Westcountry.

Michael is a proud member of the Royal Devon & Exeter NHS Foundation Trust and also The Cooperative. He is also a member of Fabian Society, where he is a Young Fabian and he is also a member of Unite.

MICHAEL’S PLEDGE – As part of a new generation of British politician, Michael pledges to serve the public interest and not his own.

• I seek elected office for the honour of serving the public and our democracy not for personal gain;
• If elected I will subscribe to high standards of integrity, transparency, accountability and prudence with public money;
• Constituents will always come first and  I will comply with the current and any new rules on outside earnings;
• I will publish online my full salary and parliamentary allowances;
• I believe it a duty to hold regular meetings, engagement events and surgeries with my community and constituents and will do so;
• I will communicate regularly with my electorate and will be available through email, telephone and other means to my constituents;
• I will regularly report back to my constituency party as well as to my constituents.
